Sekatenan History in Yogyakarta

            In 1939 or 1477 AD Caka, Raden Patah as Duke Demak Officer with the support of the trustees to build the Mosque of Demak. Furthermore, based on the deliberations of the trustees, symbols of Islam digelarlah activity continuously for 7 days before the birthday of Prophet Muhammad SAW In order for these activities attracted the attention of the people, two sets of gamelan dibunyikanlah fruit of Sunan Giri brought gending-gising creation of the trustees, especially Sunan Kalijaga.

After attending the event, people who want to embrace the religion of Islam led to utter two sentences creed (syahadatain). From the word Syahadatain that later emerged as a result of changes in terms Sekaten pronunciation. Sekaten continues to grow and is held regularly every year as the development of the Islamic kingdom of Demak into the Kingdom.
Similarly, when the shift to the Islamic kingdom of Mataram as well as Islamic Mataram kingdom split in two (Ngayogyakarta Sultanate and Surakarta) Sekaten still held regularly every year as the Islamic heritage. In the Sultanate Ngayogyakarta, celebration sekaten growing from year to year there are essentially three basic core include:
    1. Tolled the two sets of gamelan (Kanjeng Kyai Nagawilaga and Kanjeng Kyai Guntur Madu) in Kagungan Pagongan Dalem Agung Mosque Yogyakarta for 7 consecutive days, except Thursday night until Friday afternoon.
   2.  Memorial day Prophet Muhammad was born on 11 Mulud night, held in the foyer Kagungan Dalem Agung Mosque, the Reading of the Prophet by Abdi Dalem Sultanate, the relatives, officials, and people.
   3. Giving alms Ngarsa sampean Dalem Dalem Ingkang Sinuwun Kanjeng Sultan, a tradional Hajad Mountains in a ceremony Garebeg sekaten peak.





 
Supporting activities such event was held celebrations Sekaten Malem Market for 39 days, the event is the main attraction for the community and outside Jogja Jogja.
